Gaborone City Marathon is a great opportunity to make a difference
in the lives of vulnerable children, men and women. Each year, charities
are invited to submit their application for becoming a beneficiary.
The official charities selected by Gaborone City Marathon 2011 are
Bana ba Metsi, Lady Khama Charitable Trust, Mothers For All, Seeing
is Believing and YCare Charitable Trust.
Bana
Ba Metsi School
Bana ba Metsi School started in 1990. Its purpose is to provide
an opportunity for youth at risk to develop understandings, skills,
attitudes and personal qualities through the dignity of learning
and work, in order to re-enter the formal education system and become
productive members of the community. The school is in a remote location,
near Ngarange in the northwest district of Botswana, at the upper
end of the Okavango Delta. In this remote location the temptations
are reduced, while the skills taught give them a sense of achievement
and self-worth, which may have been lacking before. www.banabametsi.org
Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT)
Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT) was founded by President Seretse
Khama Ian Khama in honour of his mother to assist vulnerable women
and children by raising and disbursing funds to suitable organisations
that support these groups. www.lkct.org
Mothers
For All
Mothers for All's mission is to help ensure that no child is left
alone. The organisation provides skills training and support to
women in Botswana who are caring for children orphaned or made vulnerable
by AIDS, securing a brighter, more sustainable future for both the
children and their caregivers. www.mothersforall.org
Seeing
Is Believing
Seeing is Believing focuses on sharing key knowledge and skills
with colleagues in Botswana to help them prevent and treat blindness
in poor communities. With support from Seeing is Believing, the
Botswana Eye Care Providers Society (BECPS) works on prevention,
education and works alongside the Ministry of Health to offer free
eye care services to many Batswana. Standard Chartered Bank provides
financial support and volunteer work to BECPS since 2004.
Y Care
Charitable Trust
Y Care Charitable Trust funds and raises support to a broad base
of country-wide causes through innovative, imaginative and creative
fundraising efforts. Y Care is mainly known in Botswana for its
sponsored fundraising walks and Youth Leadership Programme. www.ycare.org.bw |
